How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

Dr. Aydin, MD, FACS answers Instagram viewer questions. One popular question and misconception is the how long will breast implants last and the belief that they will only last for only ten years.

However, Dr. Aydin correctly addresses that common idea about breast implants. It has become somewhat of a myth to say that breast implants are only going to last ten years and it is the most common misconception of patients when getting breast implants.

As far as the breast implants rupture rates go with the newer silicone-based implants at ten years, there is about a 20% rupture rate, which means 8 out of 10 patients with silicone implants do not have any problems such as rupture, leak, or any deflation and thus do not need to change or replace. Nowadays, with newer types of breast implants, the firmness, structure, and safety have also changed and may be exceeding the 10 year mark.

The FDA recommends that if a patient has a breast augmentation with silicone implants she should get an MRI done at the three year mark and then every two years after that. However, most patients do not get MRIs.  With silicone implants, there is sometimes a slow leakage that occurs and if patients feel some deflation and or that they are asymmetrical, then sometimes changing the implants would be necessary. If patients feel the volume has been retained and they are happy with the shape and size of the breast, do not have significant pain, and the capsule feels soft, at ten years, it is not a knee-jerk reaction to change them.
