What treatment is best for sun-damaged skin?
Dr. Aydin and his aesthetics team receive several questions regarding skin care and skin tone treatment.
One specific, but also common question from young adults is: “If I did a lot of tanning (in the past) and now have sun-damaged skin, how can I help even my skin tone and remove the sun spots?
Our aestheticians recommend the IPL Photofacial treatment for patients who have had sun exposure and want to improve the signs of the sun damage, rosacea and brown spots on the skin. The IPL Photofacial is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment using intense pulsed light, which can break up the melanin that cause the hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is the discoloration or darkening of the skin caused by excess melanin, a natural pigment in skin, that usually is a result of sun exposure and sun damage.
The aesthetician will use the IPL photofacial equipment by gently applying the hand piece to the patient’s skin as painless pulses of light are emitted. Besides sun-damaged skin, IPL Photofacials can help remove age spots, reduce redness caused by broken capillaries, and most benign (non-cancerous) brown and can help stimulate collagen to restore clearer skin.
Because IPL Photofacial treatment is intended to help sun-damaged and sun exposed skin, it is recommended that patients do not go tanning and refrain or limit their sun exposure about 4 weeks before treatments begin.
