What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to remove the damaged outer layer or layers of your skin, smoothing the texture and encouraging new skin generation. Depending on the peeling agent and penetration depth, chemical peels are classified as light, medium, or deep. A chemical peel is an easy, noninvasive way to rejuvenate your skin’s appearance.

Are You a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

If you're looking to enhance your overall facial skin appearance with relatively no downtime, you may be a good candidate for a chemical peel. Those with fairer skin and light hair may experience more significant results, but when appropriately adjusted, chemical peels can be effective for all skin types. Candidates should be in good overall health and not currently experiencing any active skin infections or conditions like eczema, dermatitis, or rosacea in the areas to be treated. Before undergoing a chemical peel, you must discuss your skin sensitivity, past peel experiences, and any medications you are taking with your skincare professional to ensure optimal results and safety.

What Skin Issues Can a Chemical Peel Treat?

Although chemical peels can’t treat deep facial lines or tighten loose or sagging skin, they can address a variety of conditions, including the following:

  • Acne or acne scars
  • Age spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Scaly patches
  • Scars
  • Skin pigmentation
  • Skin texture
  • Sun damage

Types of Chemical Peels

Light Chemical Peels

Light chemical peels are perfect for exfoliating just the outermost layer of the epidermis, removing dead and damaged skin cells and creating a healthy glow. Light peels are good for acne, dry skin, and fine wrinkling. Dr. Aydin usually uses naturally derived alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid. Your first few light peels will cause some minor redness and irritation, but as your skin becomes healthier, this will disappear with future light peels. Light peels can be done regularly to keep your skin glowing.

Medium Chemical Peels

Medium peels can address acne scars, deeper wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation. The trichloroacetic acid used in a medium chemical peel penetrates more deeply, past the epidermis, into the upper part of the dermis (the middle layer of the skin). Medium peels leave your skin red and stinging and will cause some crusting. That redness can linger for a period of weeks. Medium peels may be repeated every few months.

Deep Chemical Peels

These peels use phenol acid to penetrate down into the skin's lower dermal layer. Patients receive a local anesthetic and sedative prior to deep chemical peels to manage discomfort. Deep peels more aggressively address deeper wrinkles, sun damage, scars, pre-cancerous growths, and blotchy areas. Deep peels involve home pre-treatment for up to eight weeks to prepare your skin and speed up the healing process.

Recovery from a deep peel takes time. For several days, you will have peeling, crusting, redness, and discomfort. Swelling will disappear, but your skin can remain red for three months. Sunscreen is imperative to protect the new, fragile skin. Deep peels are usually only done once every ten years.

This place was absolutely amazing. They were so attentive, and they knew what they were talking about. I met with the head of the skincare department, Tracey, for about an hour before my facial actually even started. She took one look at me and was able to diagnose my skin problems right away. She took pictures and even told me different options that would and wouldn't work for me. She never tried to push certain products or procedures on me, but she was honest about what would work and what wouldn't. She even told me that since I was a college student, there would be discounted prices if I wanted to do some treatments to take care of my acne and rosacea. I will absolutely be returning to this place in the new year, and I am even sending my family for Christmas presents as well. This place gets a 10/10 score for me.

Chemical Peel Recovery in NJ

Recovering from a chemical peel varies depending on the depth of the peel. Right after the peel, your skin may feel tight and appear redder than usual. This is normal and part of the healing process. For deeper peels, your skin may also swell and form crusts.

Over the next few days, your skin will begin to peel. Depending on the intensity of the peel, it usually lasts from a few days to a week. In order to avoid scarring, it’s important not to pick or pull at the peeling skin to avoid scarring.

Keeping your skin moisturized is crucial, and we recommend a gentle moisturizer for use during the healing process. It’s also essential to avoid sun exposure and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, as your skin is very sensitive to UV rays.

For medium or deep peels, the redness might persist for a few weeks. As new, smoother skin replaces the old layers, you’ll begin to notice the improvements in texture and tone.
