Virtually everyone has pockets of fat that stubbornly refuse to respond to exercise or changes in diet. These areas are typically localized on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, even under the chin, and they’re not going anywhere. Liposuction can help as a minimally-invasive procedure by our double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Bill Aydin in Paramus, NJ. Fat pockets are suctioned out through a thin tube called a cannula to achieve a slimmer contour. Only small incisions are needed and they will not require stitches. Dr. Aydin utilizes the tumescent technique, where an anesthetic solution is first injected to minimize pain and firm the fat while making it easier to remove. The accuracy and ease of liposuction has increased dramatically throughout the years, and it is a safe procedure to get the results you want.
Locations of the body that are best targeted with liposuction can be different person to person. Areas that are commonly treated with fat reduction via liposuction are:

Tumescent liposuction, known as the “Super-Wet” approach, is a suction-assisted (SAL) technique that uses a solution and power-aided motor to help remove stubborn fat. The surgeon injects the solution, made of saline, lidocaine and epinephrine (to control bleeding), into the problem areas. The surgeon then inserts the cannula attached to the motor to remove fat cells from the body at a controlled speed. The motor helps surgeons remove anywhere from several ounces to a few pounds of fat.
Another surgical technique commonly used is the ultrasound-assisted (UAL), or ultrasonic, approach. Surgeons perform this dual process on denser areas of fat, such as in the thighs and stomach. During this technique, ultrasound waves loosen and melt fat into a liquid. Surgeons then use the cannula to extract the solution. This surgical method is more popular among men wanting more defined and contoured muscles.
Laser-assisted liposuction uses laser technology on specified areas of fat to burst energy that will loosen and liquefy the fat for removal. LAL liposuction includes brands such as SmartLipo, SlimLipo, Lipolite Laser Liposculpture, LipoLite, and ProLipo PLUS.
Would liposuction help me?
If you have areas on your body where the fat simply won’t go away, no matter what you do, liposuction could be a good procedure for you. Sometimes people think liposuction is a weight loss procedure, but it is not. The procedure is meant to only remove isolated pockets of fat, not broad areas. Dr. Aydin believes in educating his patients and figure out what procedures will help them attain their desired goals.
What is the procedure?
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure with the patient under only local anesthesia. Dr. Aydin uses the tumescent technique normally, but also sometimes adds ultrasound or laser energy to assist in making the fat easier to remove. The technique used depends on the patient and you will discuss your options with Dr. Aydin during your consultation.
Dr. Aydin begins by making several very small incisions in the target area. He then injects a lidocaine solution into the area to make the procedure more comfortable and to make the fat expand and become more firm. Next he inserts the cannula into the incisions, moving it with a horizontal motion to break up the fat deposits that are then suctioned out by the cannula.
When using laser-assisted tumescent liposuction, Dr. Aydin uses laser energy to liquefy the fat to easy removal. The concept is the same with ultrasound-assisted liposuction, except ultrasound energy is used to liquefy the fat.
In some cases, such as a Brazilian butt lift, the fat removed through liposuction from an unwanted area is purified and then injected back into the area where plumping is desired.
Recovery and Results?
After your liposuction, treated areas will be wrapped to help reduce swelling, bruising, and pain. Compression garments or elastic bandages will then be worn over the treated areas for three to four weeks. This minimizes swelling and helps your skin and tissue adapt to their new contours. You will have a fair amount of bruising and swelling, however for a week to 10 days. Depending on if you had one area or multiple areas treated, you can return to work in two to three days or it may be one week.
As your swelling subsides, your full results will be evident, but this can take up to a month. The fat removed is gone permanently, so your results will endure. It’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet. If you gain weight you can form fat pockets elsewhere.
Can I combine Liposuction with other procedures?
Liposuction can be combined with other body contouring procedures such as breast augmentation, fat grafting and tummy tucks. Mommy Makeovers is another common procedure combined with lipo.
When can I go back to work?
Our bodies all react and recover differently. The average recovery time for liposuction will get our patients back to work in 1 week.
When can I go back to exercise?
The average return to gym or regular exercise routine is usually about 2 months. Swelling from Liposuction can persist several months after surgery.
