Address Implant Concerns With Breast Implant Revision in NJ

Women who opt for breast augmentation (breast enlargement) with implants may not be happy with the results for a number of reasons. The implants’ shape, size, and/or placement may be problematic, or post-surgical complications, such as leaking, wrinkling, implant displacement, capsular contracture, or symmastia, may have occurred. Although considered safe, revision surgery to correct problems with breast implants may be more complicated, cost more, and take longer to recover from than the initial surgery.

What Is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision surgery involves modifying or replacing breast implants from previous breast augmentation surgeries. This procedure is often sought by women who want to change the size or type of their implants or by those who are experiencing issues such as implant displacement, leakage, or capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms tightly around the implant. Revision surgery can also correct complications like asymmetry or "double bubble" deformities. The goal is to restore or enhance the appearance of the breasts while addressing any medical concerns related to the original implants.

Are You a Candidate for Breast Implant Revision?

Candidates are at a healthy weight and have experienced issues with their current implants. Some questions to ask yourself when considering implant revision surgery are as follows.

Are You Unhappy With the Size of Implants Chosen?

Desiring a different implant size is the most common reason patients consider revision surgery. It's recommended to wait up to one year after the initial surgery to allow for complete swelling reduction and implant settling, ensuring an accurate assessment of the results. However, exceptions are made for significant asymmetry or cases of implant leakage or rupture.

Are Your Implants Leaking?

Implants may leak due to age, defect, injury, or overfilling. A leaking implant requires prompt replacement, typically using the original incision sites. Saline leaks are evident as the implant deflates and the body absorbs the saline. Conversely, silicone leaks might not be noticeable immediately since the material holds its shape. Often, leaks in silicone implants are only detected during routine mammograms.

Are Your Implants Causing Complications?

Breast implant procedures carry certain risks, including the following:

  • Wrinkling and rippling, most commonly in saline implants
  • Capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms around the implant, causing the breast to harden and altering its appearance and texture
  • Symmastia, where implants migrate toward the center of the chest and meet

Even when breast implant revision surgeries are successful, new implants are still subject to the same problems as the original implants.

What to Expect During the Procedure

During revision surgery, the original incisions are typically reused to extract and replace the implants with ones of a different size. If not feasible, new incisions will be made depending on the specific corrections needed. Common incision sites include around the areola, under the breast fold, or under the arm. Depending on the issue, the existing implants might be modified, replaced, or removed. Modifications can include changing the implant size, type (silicone, saline, or cohesive gel), or shape (round or anatomical). If larger implants are desired, the existing pockets within the breasts are enlarged to accommodate the increased size.

Conversely, for smaller implants, the pockets are reduced using sutures, and a mastopexy (breast lift) may be performed to ensure optimal fit and positioning. Dr. Aydin will choose the technique based on the complications presented. For capsular contracture, he may perform a capsulectomy, which involves removing the scar tissue around the implant. For implant malposition, the implant pocket might be adjusted or reconstructed to better position the implant. He will then close the incisions with sutures, and in some cases, the area may be supported with surgical tape or adhesives.
