Hernia Repairs
Dr. N. Bill Aydin, MD, FACS, of Aydin Plastic Surgery in Paramus, New Jersey diagnoses hernias in patients and performs hernia repair surgery as well.
Most insurance companies will cover hernia repair surgery if the patient is experiencing negative complications from it, such as pain and discomfort.
Hernias not only cause a variety of painful and uncomfortable symptoms, but can cause many complications if not properly treated.
Hernia Repair FAQ
A hernia occurs when a body organ is pushed through a tear in the tissue or muscle that holds that organ in place. Hernias are a common condition in individuals of all ages. For many, their main symptom of a hernia is a bulge or lump that may be more visible when standing up, bending down, or coughing. Complications of an untreated hernia include:
For these reasons, receiving proper treatment and surgical intervention in individuals with a hernia is very important. |
Dr. Aydin not only works to surgically repair hernias in patients who have already been diagnosed, but also diagnoses hernias in patients as well.
Dr. Aydin performs open hernia repairs in which an incision is made near the hernia and a mesh is sewn over the muscle. Mesh is typically used for large hernia repairs and may reduce the risk of hernia recurrence. In an open repair, the muscle itself may also be sutured closed instead of using a mesh. The surgical site is closed using staples, sutures or surgical glue.
In most cases, the patient can go home the same day they undergo hernia repair surgery. Drinking plenty of water is necessary for proper healing as well as avoiding post-surgical constipation. Straining during a bowel movement should be avoided.
After surgery, patients should not lift more than 10 pounds for 4-6 weeks. Normal activity can be increased slowly, but walking every hour is encouraged to prevent blood clot formation. Most patients can return to work within two to three days after surgery; however, the weight lifting restriction will still be in place and no strenuous activity should be performed.
Many insurance plans will help to cover the cost of a hernia repair surgery as long as it is deemed medically necessary (the individual experiences pain or discomfort from it).
